“It’s OK To Be Blue”
Paper Mache, chicken wire /// 11x19
When I created this piece, my mind was overwhelmed by how the outside world perceived me. I found myself questioning who I was through the lens of others’ assumptions and opinions. The more those thoughts piled up, the more I felt the need to disconnect and return to a time when none of that mattered—when I was a child, living in bliss.
Back then, I had a wild mane, dirt under my nails from making mud pies, and I cried freely whenever I needed to—because I simply didn’t give a f**.* I was raw, real, and unfiltered.
As I created, I craved that freedom again—the freedom to feel “blue” without shame. I wanted to remind myself that it’s okay to express my emotions openly, just like that little girl once did.
This piece is the first in a series exploring the “true masks” we wear. As humans, we hold multitudes within us—sides we often keep hidden. This work is a reminder to embrace and reveal those parts of ourselves, to wear our emotions with pride and without apology. Because this is our truth.
