“Joe Louis ‘The Brown Bomber’"
Oil on canvas/ 36" x 60"
Joseph Louis Barrow, better known as Joe Louis was born in 1981, in LaFayette Alabama. Both of his parents were children of former slaves. Nicknamed "The Brown Bomber", Louis is widely regarded as the first African American to achieve status os a nationwide hero within the United States, and was also the focal point of anti-Nazi sentiment leading up to and during World War II because of his historic rematch with German boxer Max Schmeling in 1938. Louis had only three losses in 69 professional fights, in which he tallied 52 knockouts and held the heavyweight championship from 1937 to 1949, the longest span of any heavyweight titleholder.
